Need support beside Birdwatching- finding species ?

i'm a amateur bird watcher- it's fun, and in the New Jersey/New York area, a saw a bird that i can't find in any books or online.
The bird seem in the raptor family; it was surrounding substance brown on wings and head, and white or light buff chest. I a short time ago saw it driving by and it was facing me. the only other characteristics i could say be it had a more flat/rectangular head and it was perch in a really tall tree (so i'm not sure how hulking it was. at least 1 1/2').
I can't find it in any bird books or online, so conceivably it was a female or juvenile version.
Not knowing what bird it be has just been really bothering me so any back is awesome.
Answers:    It may have been a falcon. That's the only bird i can devise of that is about that size and color. Here's a link near some pictures:

If it's not, I'm sorry, I don't know what it is. Happy birdwatching!
