50 gallon aquarium filtration?

I just got a 50 gallon aquarium for free and I'm not sure what to use for filtration. It will be housing 4 Figure eight puffer fish.

Thanks!
I would return with a simple "hang on back filter" with a bio-wheel i.e. good for up to a 75gallon.

Also, 4 figure 8's may not be a great idea. They don't typically do powerfully with any tank-mates. They are best kept alone.
Your best bet is to head over to your favorite fish store. I've always used several filtration methods including undergravel and power filter. Advantage of using both is getting more of the lighter impurity out with the power filter and the heavier stuff gets pulled into the undergravel part. I termination up cleaning out gravel once monthly and it helps keep the water much cleaner.
Answers:    Your within canister filter range at 50 gallons.

I prefer eheim classic filters.

Canisters run quiet, hold 4 times the filter medium capacity of hang on's and every tank is different but verbs out my canister filters every 3 months.

Talk about low maintenance versus a suspend on.

Make sure you have solved your snail issue if your getting brackish puffers.

They requirement a steady diet of snails to file down the teeth or they usually die in a year.

You will either have to make a snail penal complex or have made an agreement with a pet store to supply you with them (usually free).

Nothing can pounding a canister filter for performance, They more expensive intially but in the long far cheaper than a hang on due to cost of monthly medium replacemments.

good luck!
I own a 46 gal tank that I have had for nearly 3 months. I bought an aqua clear filter for a 70 gal tank and it keeps my tank really verbs. I know some people also use an under gravel filter too but I just stir up the gravel when I exchange 9 gals each week. The filter sucks it all up within 20 minutes.
Its best return with a larger filter than a smaller one, because fish will grows up. I would say its best to get a easy to function hang back filter like the aquaclear 110. Its rate for up to 110 gallons. I wouldn't recommend getting any smaller. They say you need to go double your fish container volume. If you have a 20 gallon, you will need something rated for 40 gallons.
I would go cannister for puffer fish, and I agree. Four is too many, IMO, perhaps two, but one would be ideal(to prevent bullying)
