Hi,
As Hermit crabs have a rigid exoskeleton, it does not grow next to the size of the crab, this means it must shed its skin every now and again. I seriously doubt that a hermit crab is to blame for the departure of the other crab.
Finally about catching them, this is the hard part. If you can see the crab and you can receive to it with your own hands then you can simply remove it manually. If this fail you can take half of an empty plastic bottle. Simply place some food inside the bottle and place it in the vicinity the crab. The food should lure the crab into the bottle, which means all you have to do is remove it.
Answers: Chances are no the other crab did not kill your hermit. there could be a quantity of reasons he died. Hermits don't shed, they will move from shell to shell always looking to increase their realestate.
Catching crabs like at the coast? Find a calm area like an inlet bearing along the calm shore either morning or just beforehand sunset, you will find hundreds along with snails. Bendover and pick them up. You can also find them on the rocks and in the grassy areas.
