Reef reservoir question- river circulation?
i have 250 gal/hr power filter. 2 - 600 gal/hr circulating pumps.
my questions is about the rule of have 5-10 x water circulation that is needed reef tank.
i hold 55 gallon tank. is the 5-10 water circulation rule applies to JUST THE POWER FILTER or does it include the water circulation pumps as okay.
I know this is a stupid question but i would like to know.
p.s i also hold a protein skimmer.
depends on the type of reef...
soft corals? LPS? SPS?
for soft corals i've gotten by near just a filter and maybe one small powerhead (or return from a skimmer) LPS and SPS needing increasingly respectively
but the circulation "rules" are total turn over per hour
so if you had the filter, two pumps, and the skimmer (say 300 GPH based on your other figures) you'd hold 1750 GPH... hopefully you have a 75 or so gallon tank!
yes it is turnover and not filteration you need. i currently have 40x turnover in my container but my mate claims to have 60+.
the thing is the more turnover you have the smaller number chance you have of bits of old food lieing adjectives over the sand and rocks rotting away and giving you nitrite problems...
its good to remember that most pumps do not pump out what they say the do particularly after theyve been in your tank for a few weeks.
best i can warning is to get as much flow in your tank short baksting everything to death.
hope this helps.
no such thing as a silly question.
pps if you need some address for marinefish or reef forums then let me know they are a bit better at answering these questions as they are merely for marine life
