New rescue horses...?
So we recently just got two rescue horses, one for myself name Queenie, and one for my ma, named Cotton. Well Queenie is 3 and amazing, I love her so much. But Cotton is a 12 y/o Arabian.. She has a 18 month filly that is pen with her currently but she spooks easily and is hard to touch.
I am into natural horsemanship, so I would love to try a join-up with her but there is no training ring... I am not certain what I could do with her but she is so high-strung I couldn't handle her today. We concluded up putting her back with the filly after 10 minutes because she would keep pace and was like freaking out... Any ideas on what I could do?
Answers: Congratulations on rescue! I'm for rescue 200%! Well, for your problem I'd propose separating them and beginning to work on each separately, meaning feed them the classic way with buckets, but also bring in an apple or carrot once within awhile and feed her that by hand in writ to develop a bond. It might be okay to keep the filly in a paddock next to hers, so they are close adequate but also learn separation. Mainly, its about developing trust between the horse and you. Try gently chitchat to her, approaching her slowly and with a healthy amount of caution, and as your relationship develops, you can initiate to touch her mane, her neck, her face. Grooming is also a great way to bond, although I'd propose using a soft brush to begin with, rather than freak her out over a curry. Best of luck, delight in your horses!
You need to seperate them for about a week , then try to work near the mare. She is being ditzy because she feels she shouldnt leave her troop behind.
Once she is alone - try hand feeding her , for long hours, petting her frontage . Dont give her any food other than what you hand her . Let her choose to be next to you ( which she will ) and correct her if she gets aggressive or too foolish .. let her know where you stand and what you expect of her. Do that for another week , then try taking her for walk, long walks where you let her drink the grass - you will start seeing how she reacts to things out in the world.. touch things like table, windows, cars let her see they are safe and your locked , touch signs, and posts.. The more you do with her the better she will get , and the more trust worthy she will be.
Good luck ..
