Preferred stall bedding?

Just curious about what types of bedding you all use and why? Do you use something different/special for mares with foals? I am expecting my first foal contained by the spring.
Straw is the bedding of choice for mares due to foal and next to newborn foals. Shavings can get into nostrils of foals. It's also easier to clean...

Straw is still the bedding of choice, however, for foaling mares. Most farms find that straw is far smaller quantity irritating to the mare and newborn foal and the stall much easier to clean afterward. The foals like to sleep in the straw and attain some thermal protection from the cold ground when it is thickly bedded. Straw allows the moisture to seep through, so there is smaller quantity direct skin contact with urine on straw. Within a week of foaling, many farms switch the bedding to wood shavings or another verbs, absorbent bedding.
I use sawdust for my horses, but for foals its always straw. sawdust and shavings can be really bad for a kid to breathe in. its always lots and lots and lots of straw. good luck!
I always use stray for a mare close to foaling and for her and toddler after.

For regular adult horses who are not foaling I like to use shavings and pelleted bedding. The shavings look nice and it make a soft spot for the horse to lay down contained by. The pelleted bedding is great for messy or wet stall keepers.

Good luck on your new foal. I propose straw for mom and baby!
Answers:    Okay, to me the best bedding is straw. It is great for mares and foals. Though some times in the fall to save some money I blow some leaves up and use those. I would though for certain use straw for your mare. use about a bale in the stall and clean it any time its dirty so not as much is withered. Also not so related to the topic but make sure there are no nail sticking out of the stalls because there is a strong chance that your mare will be moving around a lot while contained by labor.

I hope the pregnancy goes well!!
I use equine fresh and pine or cedar shavings.

The equine fresh cuts down on bateria, molds and odor. Also helps beside insects. You put 3 or 4 bags of that in there and afterwards put the shavings in there.

They work together to make the urine clump which make stall clean up easier. Then once a month you will put another bag of equine in the stall.

Well worth it too.
My horse (App) used to capture thrush all the time now..nothing. It be well worth it.
We use pine shavings and I like it for bedding as it's easy to clean and shovel when I enjoy to. For mares/foals we always used straw and then moved to pine shavings once they got weaned.
I use shavings, sawdust or a mixture of the two over rubber mat for my horses.
Everyone I know who breeds always uses straw because it's warm and, unlike shavings etc, won't get stuck adjectives over the foal.
sawdust. Its all nuatural and effortless to clean and doesnt irratate.
my bedding chocie would be straw coz its not 2 dusty and its pretty comfy

also rice holes are honourable beacuse it much easyer to sift thru the rice holes to get to the poop =] and u save alot more money 2 =] coz they dry pretty quick whether there out side
For standard horses- I use Pine Shavings, I use them because they're cheap. There easy to clean up.
For Mares surrounded by foal/with foal/ foals- I either Pine depending on the condition. Or straw because it is softer for them, or so it says.

Hope this helps.
I use Rubber mat with Woody pellets,But straw is also a good odds and keeps the foal nice and warm and provides comfort.
I use sawdust in my stalls up until a mare is getting ready to foal. Since I definitely hate to clean a stall bedded with straw, I try to hold out until the end possible time to change the bedding to straw. That said, my vet recommends that foals be bedded on straw for the first month. Better for their respiratory systems, and something about their blink reflex not person able to protect their eyes as well when they're younger.
Saw dust, is what I use. I like it because it absorb the pee and poop and its easy to clean.
I have always preferred wood shavings or sawdust. For a mare to foal on I similar to to bed well with sawdust, then throw a tacky layer of straw over the sawdust. That has been how we did it at the breeding farm I worked for and it seemed to work really well. The sawdust provided plently of nouns for urine to be soaked up and the straw provided a nice soft space for the mare and baby.
