Any expert on star tortoise?
planning to adopt a star tortoise fro frenz... but would like to know more before i adopt. wat can the tortoise eat ( do's n don't)...
You are adopt a star tortoise for friends; is that what you meant? I hope this is not going to be a surprise. Does your friend(s) want a star tortoise? Never surpise a person with an animal as a endowment. this pet lives 30 to 35 years if cared for properly.
You need to do some research on the types of food your tortoise would eat in the squally. there are lots of reptile sites with care sheets on tortoise diligence including the tortoise trust.
I have 3 Hermann tortoises and in general in that are some foods to avoid for all tortoises.
Stay away from lettuce including romaine as it has little nutritional pro. feed fruit sparingly and only with a basic food of leafy greens. tomato etc... are mainly water and will not give the tortoise the cellulose needed. dandilion are a great food item as are other common weeds however make certain they are safe and wash thoroughly to avoid parasites and contamination. squash, pumpkin etc... are worthy and the tortoise can eat raw carrot which will help hang on to the beak worn down. you can buy seed packs for tortoises to grow yourself. these are great but you will need alot to nurture the tortoise every day.
Be sure to add calcium and vitamin D3 suppliment at every nurture and ensure that you have the correct temperatures and UV lighting as your Tortoise can procure sick without them.
Finally good luck if you desire to take on the tortoise. they are very rewarding to keep.

I trust those two sites. tortoise trust have an articles section that you would find very useful. chelonia.org should hold a care sheet for you. Both of these sites also have a yahoo group. The members nearby are incredible at answering questions. Many of them have owned tortoises for many years.
Cuttlebone (like you would buy for a bird) is excellent for keeping a tortoise's beak worn down and allows them to pinch in extra calcium.
I hope you enjoy your unusual tortoise!
most tortoises are fond of kale, romaine lettuce, collard greens and dandelion greens, NO ICEBURG LETTUCE.
